BASIC SEWING TECHNIQUES Fern MacDonald ** No Experience Required***This course is designed for a beginner with very little or no sewing experience. Learn to operate the sewing machine while building the basic skills of sewing and finishing seams, making darts, sewing a curve, proper pressing techniques, and how to use fusible interfacing. Learn how to do small repairs like hemming a pair of pants or jeans. You will make a binder of samples for future reference. Build your skills in a bright classroom where the sewing machines are supplied.
LEVEL 1 SEWING - INTRODUCTION TO SEWING A GARMENT Fern MacDonald The perfect project for this class is a drawstring/elastic pajama style pant. This project has proven to be a great starter project to learn the basics of garment construction and to achieve success by completing your project. Otherwise you may choose a garment pattern that has 4 pattern pieces or less. Learn and understand the commercial sewing pattern envelope information and how to determine the proper size for success. It is not the same as ready to wear sizing. Learn the language of sewing; build sewing skills and learn to operate the sewing machine. Correct cutting, marking, pressing, and seam finishing techniques as well as simple pattern adjustments and fitting techniques will all be addressed. Learn to follow the pattern instruction sheet. Fern will guide you through the terminology of ease, fabric grain and notches while teaching you how much fun and rewarding sewing can be. Sewing machines and pressing equipment are all provided for you in a bright fully equipped sewing room. LEVEL 2 SEWING - BEYOND THE BASICS FOR ADULTS Fern MacDonald This class is designed for those students who have taken Level 1 Sewing or have completed a garment from a commercial pattern recently and have a clear understanding of all topics covered in Level 1 ( see class description). Students are encouraged to choose a project that will slightly challenge their previous sewing skills; for example darts, zipper, facings, collar, cuffs, buttons and buttonholes, set-in sleeve etc. For first class bring pre-washed fabric, pattern, all basic sewing supplies, shears, pins, measuring tape, fabric marker and thread). Since you already know your correct pattern size, these measurements will be needed for minor pattern adjustments. Daytime and evenings offered for this class level. TWIN NEEDLE MAGIC Denise Gunn Machine embellishment is an exciting extension of your sewing experience. In this technique class you will explore using both twin needles and wing needles. You can use these techniques to become an adventurous, creative, and satisfied stitcher. Come to this class and learn to use more options on your machine.
FREE MOTION - STIPPLING Denise GunnLearn how to use stippling or free motion to finish your quilt. This free motion technique is very easy once you learn how to set up your machine. Learn which needles work best. You will complete samples in this class.
TRAILING HEARTS Denise Gunn Another variation on the Log Cabin Block. Denise has added some machine appliquéd hearts, flowers, and leaves. You will learn a new way of doing continuous bias for the stems. Approximate finished size 80X62 Beginners quilting as well as beginner appliqué a prerequisite for this class.
STACK AND WHACK Denise Gunn This technique produces a Kaleidoscope pinwheel without the use of mirrors, templates or extensive planning. Stack and Whack will create exciting effects quickly and easily. Adding sashing between the blocks and smaller pinwheels for the border finishes off the quilt. SASHIKO done by hand not machine! Deb White *****NEW***** This is a very relaxing sewing method originating in Japan thousands of years ago. It was popular in the 70's and is making a huge comeback from a quilting aspect as well as for home decor, apparel, and for gifting. It is a basic running stitch with old and new designs, and the wonderful thing is that it stitches up quite quickly. I have projects for beginners and some more challenging works as well. Come and enjoy learning a wonderful old tradition and the joys of hand sewing. Register early as class size is small.
